This hive was once divided into two 4 frame queen right colonies by a division board. Shown here, the division board has been removed and moved outside the outer most frame allowing the remaining queen right colony to utilize all 8 frames in the hive. Possible reasons for converting from a two queen hive to a one queen hive; one half of the hive dies, the beekeeper wishes to make it into a split, or the beekeeper uses it as a nuc to fill a deadout in a 2 story hive.
